Zebra Picklist Mode: Fix Multiple Barcode Scanning Errors
Few things slow down a warehouse or retail workflow like scanning the wrong barcode. If your Zebra device is picking up the wrong code when multiple barcodes are close together, you are not alone. It is a common frustration that wastes time, creates data errors, and disrupts momentum when your team is trying to move fast.
The Problem: Scanning the Wrong Barcode
In many warehouse, fulfillment, and retail environments, labels include more than one barcode in a small space. When your Zebra scanner is in the default mode, it reads whichever code sits inside the field of view, often the wrong one. The result is slower workflows, extra re‑scans, and frustrated employees.
Why It Happens
- By default, Zebra devices scan any barcode that is in view.
- There is no built‑in way in default mode to target a single barcode without physically blocking the others.
- Tight label design is common in warehouse, fulfillment, and retail operations, so codes sit close together.
The Simple Fix: Picklist Mode
Picklist Mode tells the scanner to read only the barcode under the aimer dot. You choose the code, the device obeys. No more guessing, no more covering other barcodes with your hand.
How to Enable Picklist Mode
- Open a blank document, such as Notepad, so you can see raw scan output for testing.
- Turn on Picklist Mode by scanning the configuration barcode from Zebra’s guide: Picklist Mode how‑to (PDF). You can also enable it with Zebra 123Scan.
- (Optional) Enable auto‑aim to make targeting even easier.
- Add a carriage return so each scan drops to a new line in your test document for easier reading.
- Test the behavior. Aim the dot at the exact barcode you want to read. Only that barcode should scan.
- Need to undo changes? Scan the Factory Defaults barcode in the same Zebra guide to reset.
Troubleshooting Tips
- If the aimer dot does not appear, verify that aiming is enabled in your scanner settings or profile.
- If nothing scans, confirm your device model supports Picklist Mode and that you used the correct configuration barcode for your engine.
- Still inconsistent results? Reboot the device, then re‑apply the setting with 123Scan or rescan the ON barcode.
